Position Summary:

The Worker’s Compensation Claims Specialist manages and oversees the worker’s compensation claims from injury date to resolution, by coordinating with insurance adjusters to determine the most appropriate activities and resources to manage the overall cost and expeditious resolution for all claims, and communicating with various levels of Operational management to facilitate the best outcomes.


  • Review and evaluate all worker’s compensation claims reporting data to insure that desired outcomes are achieved.
  • Initiate contact with injured worker addressing any concerns regarding medical treatment, prescriptions, or income benefits.
  • Monitor medical treatment plan and work status reporting.
  • Act as liaison between management, claim adjuster, and employee to support return to work (regular or temporary transitional) and claims resolution.
  • Access payroll data to secure wage information to complete wage statements.
  • Coordinate leave of absence and transitional duty status with Human Resources department.
  • Maintain a pro-active approach to cost control and claims resolution, specifically in the first 90 days of the life of the claim.
  • Coordinate with claims adjusters to initiate additional cost control measures such as Nurse Case Management, Independent Medical Exams, or Surveillance.
  • Review and evaluate reserve recommendations for appropriateness and provide approval up to $50,000.
  • Participate in the determination of claims strategies, negotiations, reserve adequacy and subrogation efforts.
  • Update and report weekly metrics on open claims to support the overall goals of the department.

Job Requirements

Skills and Experience Needed:

  • Minimum 5 years of multi-state worker’s compensation claims handling experience.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Conflict management skills to stay calm and composed in stressful situations.
  • General computer and database management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and identify potential escalations in risk or exposure.
  • Ability to work with all levels of business contacts, both internal and external.
  • Ability to travel as needed, approximately 10%.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office platform (Excel, Powerpoint).
